Core Curriculum
Mastery with Meaning. Faith with Foundation.
Our core subjects are taught for deep understanding, spiritual insight, and lasting impact—equipping students with both knowledge and wisdom.
At Rock Harbor School, we believe students deserve more than surface-level understanding. Our curriculum is built on the principle of mastery—giving every student the time, tools, and support they need to truly grasp key concepts before moving on.
Language Arts
Language is foundational to communication, comprehension, and connection. That’s why we take a multi-layered approach to literacy. Our reading program blends All About Reading and Reading A-Z to build decoding, fluency, and comprehension. Lessons are differentiated to meet students where they are, helping reluctant readers gain confidence and advanced readers stay challenged.
In writing, we use IEW (Institute for Excellence in Writing) and Shurley English to teach students how to express themselves clearly and creatively. From complete sentences to structured essays, students learn grammar, syntax, and voice—building blocks of lifelong communication skills.
Spelling is taught through a multi-sensory, Orton-Gillingham–based method that makes phonics come alive. And we emphasize handwriting—both manuscript and cursive—not just for form, but for focus, fine motor development, and reading fluency.
Math
Mathematics should make sense. Through programs like Math-U-See, RightStart Math, Rocket Math, and IXL, we equip students to understand and apply mathematical concepts with confidence. Manipulatives, mental math, and real-world scenarios make abstract ideas tangible. Students don’t just pass tests—they solve problems, think critically, and engage math with purpose. Our flexible, mastery-based levels allow learners to advance at the right pace, from number sense to algebra.
Science
Our science instruction is both wonder-filled and truth-centered. Students explore the natural world through hands-on experiments, interactive labs, and outdoor observation. Units cover earth science, biology, chemistry, and physics—always pointing back to God as Creator and Sustainer. We foster curiosity by encouraging students to ask questions, make discoveries, and connect science to everyday life. With an emphasis on stewardship, our students learn to care for creation while building a strong foundation in scientific thinking.
History
In history, we don’t just memorize dates—we uncover stories. Our approach helps students make meaningful connections between past and present through timelines, literature, projects, and discussion. From ancient civilizations to American heritage, students examine key events through a biblical lens—highlighting God’s providence, human responsibility, and the shaping of cultures. We emphasize critical thinking, discernment, and the ability to see history not just as facts, but as a living narrative that informs our future.
Bible & Devotion
The heart of our curriculum is the Word of God. Every morning begins with prayer, worship, and devotional time. Students journal, memorize scripture, and explore the character of God and His story of redemption. We don’t just teach Bible facts—we foster faith. Our goal is to help students develop a personal, daily walk with Jesus and see how His truth shapes every subject and situation.
