More Than Math: Raising Financially Literate Students at Rock Harbor
It’s a question many parents—and even students—have asked: Will I ever use calculus in real life? While academic rigor is important, we at Rock Harbor understand that education must also be practical. That’s why we don’t just teach math—we teach life math. And we don’t wait until high school to start.
From kindergarten through 12th grade, every student at Rock Harbor is immersed in life skills education, including financial literacy. This isn’t an elective or an afterthought—it’s a core part of our curriculum and culture. Every four years, each student will take a dedicated financial literacy course as part of our life skills program. But beyond that, financial understanding is woven into the everyday fabric of our school.
Every Friday, across all grade levels, we focus school-wide on practical math and real-world skills:
- Telling time and managing schedules
- Understanding menus, bills, tips, and taxes
- Giving change and estimating totals
- Saving, investing, and giving (including tithing)
- Learning how credit cards and bank accounts work
- Planning for short- and long-term financial goals
- Working with measurements through hands-on activities like cooking, where students practice unit conversions and learn the math behind recipes
We want our students to not only be academically strong—but also confident in handling real-world scenarios. That’s why we’ve created a unique and engaging school economy. Students earn digital money for academic effort, positive behavior, and character. They can spend it at the school store, save it for future rewards, or give it to others. It’s real-world economics, built into the daily rhythm of school life.
Even more, students can apply for school jobs, complete with interviews, training, and feedback. They learn what it means to earn a paycheck, get recognized for hard work, or face consequences when responsibilities are not met. Kids love it. It makes them feel mature, capable, and proud—and most importantly, it teaches them valuable lessons that stick.
Some of the most engaging learning happens through simulations. Students plan vacations using maps, itineraries, and budgets. They explore menus and catalogs to practice consumer math. They role-play real-life scenarios like ordering at a restaurant or managing a personal budget. This kind of learning is not only meaningful—it’s memorable.
And we don’t stop at the school doors.
Each weekend, families are invited to participate in an optional Life Skills Challenge. These activities are fun, practical, and designed to create connection and collaboration among family members. Whether your child is in kindergarten or high school, the whole family can learn and grow together. Plus, students can earn rewards for their participation.
At Rock Harbor, we believe math is more than numbers on a page. It’s about applying those numbers to build a life of wisdom, responsibility, and purpose. We are raising students who will not only memorize formulas—but know how to use them in the real world.
We’re not just preparing students for college. We’re preparing them for life.
